About

I’m a Swedish jewellery maker, now living in The Netherlands. I make jewellery as a side activity alongside my work, and combine digital days in the office with more occasional (but oh, so precious!) spare moments behind my workbench at home.

When I first started this blog, I wanted to use it to showcase jewellery that I make. A few months into the project, I realised that it will be about more than that. I also want to share thoughts around jewellery in general, what it is that inspires me and what I’m working on.

Jewellery has so many meanings, on so many levels. Was there ever a time in history or a place on earth where people did not care about jewellery? No. Whether it has been for beauty, status, power, to confirm human relationships or simply for trade, jewellery has always been part of human culture, and always will be.

Why “galeriaredelius”? I have had this name in my head for more than ten years. It is like a tweak of my own name, with a Spanish spelled “gallery” in it. Just felt right.

Another idea that I had when I started the blog was to mix languages. Again, pretty soon I realised that it would become messy. I have decided to post mainly in English, a tiny bit of Swedish might slip in. I was blessed with a brain designed for languages and have had the chance to learn a few, so please, if you want to get in touch, feel free to write either in Scandinavian (Swedish-Danish-Norwegian) or in English, German, Spanish, French or Dutch. I love to cross language borders and look forward to getting in touch with jewellery lovers/makers from across the world.

Thanks for your interest, and keep in mind: there might be more to jewellery than you think!

Gunilla Redelius

  4. Hi Gunilla, thanks for liking and commenting on my blog. This About page is great, and you’ve already changed my perceptions of jewellery by pointing out that it is valued for its ‘beauty, status, power, to confirm human relationships’. I never really thought about how deeply ingrained jewellery is in our culture until that point, I just thought of it as something pretty to wear.

    • Hi Adrian, I’m glad if my message came across here! Jewellery can be both things, something pretty to wear (which is important too!), and also so many other things. I think that the more you pay attention to it, the more you see this. Thanks for your input, much appreciated!

  5. It is nice to “meet” you as I love both jewellery (usually buy a piece of two when I travel… a favourite souvenir) and Europe but I have a special fondness for all things Dutch as I lived in Zwolle for a year. I look forward to following you and watching you create. Happy blogging and have a great day, Cheryl from Canada, but soon to be Cairo (almost the same – ha ha)

    • Nice to “meet” you too, Cheryl! Funny, my commuter train is the one that goes from Amsterdam to Zwolle (I live in Almere, haven’t yet been to Zwolle, though). Welcome back here anytime you like, and I’ll follow your adventures in Cairo!
And yes, isn’t jewellery the perfect souvenir to bring, you don’t need any luggage space for it, and everytime you wear it, it reminds you of where you got it.

      • Thanks so much 🙂 Have a great day and I will think of you and your blog the next time I purchase jewellery which most likely will be Egyptian. Take care, Cheryl

    • Thanks, it’s good to have you around! It’s amazing, I had no idea what blogging could mean or bring when I started, I took the first steps in an experimental (and perhaps hesitating) way. All you great people out there, like yourself, make it so much worth it, and so rewarding!

  7. Gunilla! You are a very talented artist. I can barely master English let alone another language, so your knowledge of so many is admirable. Thanks for visiting my blog and keep up the fantastic work! One love 🙂

  8. Hi there. Thanks for visiting my blog. Interesting musings you’ve got here about jewellery. I am not a wearer of jewellery but as an art form, I find you jewellery markers rock. If you want to see some interesting jewellery designs, Google “Anna Ruth Henriques jewellery”. I think you’ll find her work interesting.

    • Thank you so much! I have just checked her website, and you are right, I do find her work very interesting! Some pieces are kind of provocative and slightly scary (if you have an issue with spiders, like I do), but they are at the same time very beautiful. You’ve expanded my jewellery horizon yet a bit, thank you for that! And that’s what I like with jewellery, the horizon is endless, there is so much to discover!

    • No need to apologise, on the contrary, thanks for the link, I have checked it and voted. (And sorry for the delay, I found your comment in the spam folder.)
Although I understand that WP needs to look ahead and choose directions, it seems they risk to “throw away the baby with the bath water” here (which is a Swedish saying that may not make sense to anyone, but it means that you make such drastic changes that you also throw away the part that you treasure the most, the core).

    • Thank you very much! Yes, it’s special to connect to each other around what we create or express, even if that is in completely different forms (words, metal, photography, etc). That is what I have come to love with blogging.

  9. “Was there ever a time in history or a place on earth where people did not care about jewellery?” As far as I know, the oldes known beads, from the Blombos cave in South Africa, are about 75000 years old. So you are working in a very old tradition indeed.

    • Thank you for mentioning this! I didn’t know there was any jewellery found that goes back that far in time, that’s amazing. And somehow comforting, too. Wow, what a perspective in time that is…

  17. Hej! Nice work you have here and a good blog- I am new to WordPress so mine is a shambles at the moment, but I am learning! People say my work has a Scandinavian feel to it, and I take that as a compliment…and Sweden has always been a big part of my life. My uncle moved to Sweden in the 50’s and married my aunt, and he became a naturalised Swede. I have two cousins, have visited many times, and one of my best friends here in the UK is Swedish. I can count to 20 in Swedish (Ha ha)!

    • Hej Henrietta! Great to see you on WordPress, and here in my little corner of it! I look forward to see how your blog develops and see more of your work. Nice to hear about your Swedish connections as well. When I did a jeweller training in Belgium, I was told I had a Scandinavian style, but I could not really see that myself. I guess sometimes the differences are subtle. Enjoy the blogging, I look forward to be following you!
